Most people are not experienced travelers. It is something that is only associated with experience on the road. In the beginning you make many travel mistakes.
Travel-friendliness is a process that results from missed buses, stupid behavior, cultural ignorance and countless small mistakes. Then, one day, you move seamlessly through airports and integrate into new cultures like a fish to water.
I have learned these tips over the last twelve years.
With these tips for travel, you will save money, sleep better, leave the beaten track more often, meet locals and simply be a better traveler.
Here are the Top 10 Tips To make you Travel safer in 2021 :
1. Always pack a towel, a flashlight and a first aid kit
It is the key to successful galactic hitchhiking and common sense. You never know when you’ll need it, whether on the beach, at a picnic or just to dry off. While many hostels offer towels, you never know that carrying a small towel will not add as much weight to your bag.
Your light will help you on your journey. So you can see at night, avoid stepping on things and can tell ghost stories. Who is afraid of the dark?
Remember to take a basic first aid kit with you.
Accidents happen, so be prepared. I use plasters, antibacterial cream and ointments for minor cuts and scratches. You never know when you will need it and you can’t always get it when you travel.
2. Buy a small backpack / suitcase
If you buy a small backpack (I like something around 35/40 liters), you will be forced to pack lightly and not take too much stuff with you. People tend to fill up space by nature. So if you pack light but have a lot of extra space in your bag, you will end up saying “fine, I think I can take more” and then regret it.
3. Try new food and keep your guard up
Do not ask what it is. Just put it in your mouth and see if you like it. If you are on your guard, you can do without unusual and delicious local cuisine. Here are some articles about how to eat delicious and cheap food around the world:
Some people bite, so keep a healthy level of suspicion. You don’t want to be taken in by travel scams or put yourself in unpleasant situations. Be open, but careful.
4. Remember to take extra socks
You lose a lot of laundry grits, wear and tear and wandering, so extra packing is useful. I only take a few more than I need. Nothing beats a fresh pair of socks!
5. Take along an extra debit and credit card with you
Disasters happen. It is always good to have a backup in case you are robbed or lose a card. You do not want to be stuck in a new place without having access to your money. I once duplicated a card and put a freeze on it. I could not use it for the rest of my trip.
I was very happy that I had an extra and not like my friend who didn’t and was forced to borrow money from me all the time!
6. Do not be afraid to use a card.
Looking like a tourist is not as bad as getting really lost and ending up in the wrong neighborhood. Do not be afraid to use a map or ask for directions and look like a tourist. After all you are one! I always use a map when I travel. It helps you get where you need to go!
But don’t be afraid to get lost on purpose.
An aimless wandering through a new city is a good way to get to know it, off the beaten track and away from the tourists. You might be surprised by the hidden gems you find. I like to walk around and try to find my way without Google Maps!
7. Always visit the local tourist office.
They know about everything that goes on in the city. They can tell you about free activities, special events during your stay and everything in between. They even offer discounts on attractions and transportation. It is their job to help you experience the destination better.
It’s amazing how many travelers skip this when they visit somewhere, but as an accomplished traveler, you know you need to take advantage of this resource! This is probably one of the least used travel tips in the world. Make use of the tourism authority! Save money!
8. Always carry a lock and copies of your passport
They are practical, especially if you stay in dormitories and need to lock up your things. Take a small combination lock with you when you travel. Don’t use one with keys, because if you lose the keys, they are screwed!
Remember to make additional copies of your passport and important documents.
Don’t forget to send a copy to yourself by e-mail as well. You never know when you might need documentation and may not want to carry your original with you. If your passport is stolen, a copy will be helpful for your police report.
9. Learn basic phrases in the native language of your destination and history
The locals will appreciate it and it will facilitate your interaction. You don’t have to know the language, but learn a few things like “Hello”, “Goodbye“, “Thank you!”, “Where is the bathroom?” will go a long way to make yourself popular with the locals. They’ll like that you tried.
Read a history book
You cannot understand the present of a place if you know nothing about its past. Find out about the destinations you visit. It will give you a deeper understanding of this place you have wanted to see for so long!
10. Locals don’t go out every night and you shouldn’t.
Go food shopping. You can learn a lot about the diet of the locals by seeing the type of food they buy. You will also save a lot of money. You will not regret it. Cook your food, save money, surprise yourself!
Remember to always eat in expensive restaurants during lunch.
Most expensive restaurants offer lunch specialties with the same food they would serve for dinner, but at half price! This is the best time to eat out while traveling.
